Kyle Barker notes:
Some key points to what separate Lophophora williamsii from the other Lophophora species.
Stem Morphology:
Growth Habit: Often solitary until larger. Seems to usually start offsetting when 5-7cm diameter, but often does so from the base where the transition from stem to roots happens.
Skin Colour: Greyish-green.
Rib Form: Straight or spiraling, not often wavy, usually follows a straight-ish form.
Number of ribs5,8 & 13 ribs.
Areoles: Closer together than L. diffusa, much liek L> fricii. often 1-2cm apart.
Flower/Fruit Morphology & Reproduction
Petal Colour: light-medium pink
Petal Shape: rounded at tip.
Style colour: white-pink
Filament colour: white
Fruit Colour: light pink
# of seeds per fruit (averages): 0-15
Reproduction: self-fertile. can produce viable seed by itself.
Readily Hybridizes with: So far we have had little luck, however I did manage to get a L. fricii to produce 5 seeds in one fruit from L. williamsii pollen. only 2 germinated and only one is still alive, so we will find out later if it was a cross or if the L. fricii just self pollinated.
Key characteristics that define this species from others.
self fertile, no other Lophophora is.
main alkaloid is mescaline, whereas other Lophophora are pellotine.
Does not cross with any other Lophohpora species.
Produces far fewer seeds than other species, and seed testa/hillum re unique.
Pink rounded petals, other species are generally more pointed.
does not produce 21 ribs.

Kyle Barker notes:
Some key points to what separate Lophophora fricii from the other Lophophora species.
Stem Morphology:
Growth Habit: Can be solitary for a long time, but usually forms clusters in cultivation. More often than not it starts putting out more stems at around 4-5cm.
Skin Colour: Greyish-green, much like L. williamsii.
Rib Form: Very variable, from straight like L. williamsii to wavy like L. diffusa.
Number of ribs5,8,13 & 21 ribs.
Areoles: Closer together than L. diffusa. Similar to L. williamsii, around 2cm apart.
Flower/Fruit Morphology & Reproduction
Petal Colour: Shades of pink, from light to dark. More often medium-dark.
Petal Shape: Long and pointed, like that of L. diffusa.
Style colour: White-pink.
Filament colour: White, sometimes a light shade of pink.
Fruit Colour: Pink, often dark.
# of seeds per fruit (averages): 10-60
Reproduction: Self sterile. Needs 2 genetically unique plants to set viable seeds (ie. 2 plants from different seeds).
Readily Hybridizes with: L. koehresii (mother), with L. fricii pollen. Not so easy using L. koehresii pollen with L. fricii plants.
Key characteristics that define this species from others.
Pink flowers set it aside from L. diffusa, pointed flowers show difference between it and L. williamsii.
Being self sterile, unlike the self fertile L. williamsii. L. diffusa and L. koehresii are also self sterile.
It will not readily hybridize with either L. diffua or L. williamsii. The pollen from L. fricii is readily accepted by L. koehresii, however not so much the other way around.

Species Notes: A varigated form is a condition where chlorophyll is lacking or reduced in part of the plant tissue. Mutations do occur where no chlorophyll is present, but these are not varigates and cannot survive on their own, but must be grafted. |
