cintia
Etymology -The genus "Cintia" is named after the town of Cinti near Otavi, Potosi in Bolivia. The land of origin of this plant.
Discovered in 1996, Cintia is one of the more recent cactus discoveries. Its discoverers Knize and Riha noted that this species was similar in appearance to Copiapoa or Eriosyce, but it was widely accepted as unique enough to be in a genus of its own. Since that time, however, some have been satisfied to lump the species under the genus Rebutia. This is the treatment used in The New Cactus Lexicon and is one of the moves that has brought this publication much criticism.
Cintia is a high-elevation plant with large, tuberous roots that barely rises above the ground. It appears often as an irregular mis-mash of tuberculate ribs that are poorly defined. It bears yellow flowers out of new areoles at the top of the plant very similar to that of Copiapoa.
