Pediocactus on Opuntia root?

Post by Charles »

An Pediocactus on Opuntia root was reported to me by a reliable person. The gentleman lives in Sparks NV and has a green house. The Pediocactus reported had a cluster of heads baseball sized and larger. Does anyone know if this grafting and where can I get a few?

I haven't heard anything about it, but do you really need a grafted one? You are probably one of the few people on this board that lives in a climate where Pediocactus wouldn't be a pain in the behind to grow on its own roots. I'd even think it would grow in the ground where you are assuming you didn't let any bigger plants overtake it.

By the way, your description of that plant is pretty much the definition of grafting.

In theory any cactus can be grafted on any other cactus. Not sure what you mean by "Opuntia root" but probably you mean Opuntia stock? Although I once grafted a Tephrocactus on a Pterocactus tuber which I guess would qualify as a "root".

Grafting is often used to grow cacti that are tricky or temperamental on their own roots in cultivation using stocks that are more tolerant to graft onto:-

I don't see the point.
