Aloes, Aloes and more Aloes...!

Post by Martin_Heigan »

We are approaching mid winter in South Africa, and the Aloes are preparing to put on an impressive display this year. I will be taking lots of photographs.

Here is a bit of an appetizer...

Enjoy...!

Martin,

These pictures must have been taken in a botanic garden setting. Which one?

My wife and I are planning to visit Western South Africa in September, and while the main aloe bloom will be finished, we would love to visit this place.

I have been very involved with an aloe garden in Southern California, The Jurupa Mountains Cultural Center, for more than 6 years. Its amazing how similar the terrain is.

Hi Buck,

You have created a beautiful bit is Africa right there in CA! I have visited CA a few times, and the similarities struck me as well. Even the climates are actually very similar. Just as point if interest, do you know about The Succulenta 2006 - 7th World Succulent Conference at the end of September? It is in the Western Cape in absolute Succulent Heaven. A lot of Stapeliads will be in flower in their natural habitat then.
Here is a link to the Succulenta 2006 page:

The photographs are from the Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden in Poortview, which is about 30 minutes drive to the West of Johannesburg. I live less tan 5 minutes away, and also look after the Stapeliads at the Garden. Here is a link to the WSBG, and 2 panoramic photos that I took in the succulent rock garden:

Thanks Martin!

I was under the impression that the Congress was very expensive. It's definitely not. We'll most likely see you there.

Hi Buck,

Yes, the conference is not all that expensive, only the tours are a bit pricey. It is not too bad in USD though. I will definitely be at the conference, and probably do a bit of a field-trip by myself too.

Best regards

Beautiful pictures there Martin, are these in your garden? or out in the great garden?

This is at the botanical gardens close to my house. I have lots of aloes and succulents, but nothing quite as impressive as this. I give more details about the botanical garden earlier in the discussion.
