Stapelia schinzii var. schinzii Time-Lapse

Post by Martin_Heigan »

Good day all,

Stapelia schinzii var. schinzii is one of my all time favourites. I always find the size ratio of the flower to the plant really impressive. The fur that moves with the slighted breath can also be very entertaining for the young at heart.

The flower started opening late in the afternoon yesterday. So I guess this would classify as a May-Day flower. The Time-Lapse movie was photographed from 15:00 to 22:30, with a photo every 10 minutes. It is interesting to note how fast and dramatic the effect is when the petals part. I was watching the flower when the second set of petals separated, and it is a fast motion with a bit of a popping sound. I would have expected this to be a slower process.

You will need install the free Quicktime codec to play the movie. If you don't have Quicktime, you can download it here:

I really like those time-lapse movies! It's very interesting to see a flower develop.

Martin,

Love those time-lapse videos of yours. I'm amazed at some of the flowers on the Stapelaids. There's no doubt you are at home behind a camera.
