Re: Cactus Finch?
That's what I was talking abaut. Why keep this for yourself???? Unless you were afraid someon could say: Wouuu! Beautifull! I even think about borrow some ideas. Well, my cactus plots are almost random in design. I do not buy many materials but pick them up here and there. I went up to a guy's hous...

Re: Cactus Finch Photos
[/attachment] P4280244.JPG Oh, Yeah, I have some photos. My garden is just about 'mature' now. 80% of my front yard is in cacti plots. Last year I went on a planting spree adding grasses and penstermons and Holland bulbs to provide some shade. I also added two more plots, one near a big yucca and on...

Re: soil mix for outdoor bed
I guess I have used 50 different soil mixes for outdoor cacti. The only caution is using too much organics where the plot is in the shade in the winter. It gets cold and wet in Reno area. I use "hotter" (richer) soil than most cactiphiles and I water more too. Sometimes I pay the penalty w...

Cactus Finch?
I have a 4' tall cholla in my front yard. This morning I saw a pair of House Finches building a nest in it. In Arizona the Cactus Wren builds nests in cholla.
Birds have been eyeing this cholla for a few years. The spines do not bother them as they hop from segment to segment.

Sparks Spring update
I usually consider that spring arrives May 1st in my cactus garden. This year it is a full month early. Two days ago one Pediocactus simpsonii put out four flowers. The rest of my cacti are 85% swollen with moisture. I only lost one cactus over the winter. That is a world record for me. It was a cac...

Mealy Bugs
I assume I've had a bad outbreak of mealy bugs.
I sprayed the yard three times and it killed 99.999% of them.
I found these eggs? or mealy bugs? on some dried mud.
Anyone know what these are? (these mud balls are dime sized.)

Another garden revision
I remodled an old garden plot last week. Before. http://www.cactiguide.com/forum/userpix/17_001_14.jpg After: http://www.cactiguide.com/forum/userpix/17_004_9.jpg Notice how the Echin. trig. (Torrance Co NM) has now spread out after removing the boulders. I had to remove this Grusonia pulchella to m...

Beautiful, Charles! What is the plant in the first picture? That is either a small pad Opuntia or an Opuntia fragilis. Either Davi or John gave it to me. I have about 8 differnt small pad Opuntias and a couple of larger Opuntias. I know nada about Opuntias. I used to have about 100 but gave them to...
