Species Notes: A hybrid of Disocactus phyllanthoides x Disocactus speciosus. This plant has long been confused as the species Disocactus ackermannii. The original plant was grown in cultivation in the early to mid 1800's, but towards the turn of the 20th century, this hybrid plant was introduced.
Reportedly, the true species plant of Disocactus ackermannii is difficult to grow although I have not experience with it nor know anyone who can attest to that. On the other hand, I have first hand experience with the hybrid plant and can confirm its reputation of being practically indestructible. It is this characteristic of the hybrid plant which has made it so popular.
