Notes for the Genus:

Denmoza

Etymology - The name Denmoza is an anagram of the name Mendoza.
It seems that the only feature consistent between one plant in the genus Denmoza and another is the shape and color of the flower. Surely many other cactus genera consist of multiple species with less variation than what is found within Denmoza. None-the-less, taxonomists see fit to consider all these plants to be of one species. Despite the remaining a singular species at large, plants now included in this genus have been bounced around in 5 other genera prior to settling in Denmoza. These plants may be smallish and globose or short columnars. Spines vary in color from red to yellow to grey to golden and may be long and straight or short and recurved. Some plants have wispy radial spines while others lack them. The flowers are very similar to those in Cleistocactus or Oreocereus in that they are tube shaped, red with anthers sticking out the end. The flowers are also bilaterally symmetrical.

Denmoza is found frequently in cultivation, but may be reluctant to flower for some growers. In the wild, these plants are endemic to Argentina and found mostly in Mendoza and Salta provinces.
