Tony, whats that columnar type cactus there in the back of the largest clay pot at the top center of the picture? there's 3 of them. They look very similar to a small cactus I've got.

Hi andy,
Those are cuttings of Pilosocereus lanuginosus.
This is the plant that I took them from,it grows well outside here except even in our mild winters the tips freeze and die,so now I cut off all new growth at the end of the season and root em.

Thanks a ton. The new growth does look like what I have. Will make sure to protect it as my basement may approach freezing at times in winter.

I was really conflicted about what to post. I finally decided that this contest needed some non-cacti succulents to provide some balance to all the cactaceous succulents :D

This is an image that I think has strong artistic composition, but I chose the second picture for the competition. I'm curious to know if folks think I picked the right one.

Echinocactus grusonii and Aloe polyphylla in my C&S garden, 4/19/2007:

And the photo I choose to compete with all the pokies:

Dyckia marnier-lapostollei v. Estevesii and Neoporteria jussieui in my backyard 7/18/2007

Did I pick the right one, or not?

Yep, you picked the right one to make it easier for me to win. (Just my opinion)

OH and was that you Darryl that posted the Huntington pic? -Pachycereus marginatus is the name you were looking for.

Paracelsus,
I think so. I prefer the second image, but I do find the cactus in the background a bit too distracting.
How about a tighter crop, and removing the flower (photographically!) ???
I had a go, and I thought it looked better.
If you like I can post the adapted image for comparison.

No, but thanks Al. I can do that myself. I actually liked the hint of the flower in the background, and had to do some layering adjustments to brighten that area up a little. Besides, the contest was supposed to be "two or more different plants", which I assumed meant different species. But maybe not. :)

That's what I meant originally, but a batch of the same species is okay for me too. In my opinion, variety means a bigger chance to win. Most pictures feature more than one species, although second species may be well hidden.

Paracelsus - It's ironic isn't it that you spend time highlighting something, then some guy (me) comes along and says it's distracting! Typical!!
What I particularly like about your picture are the muted colours, and the strong diagonal composition.
I felt the flower detracted somewhat from both, and keeping it in also left a bare area at the top right.
That's just my (hopefully constructive) opinion, for what it's worth (probably not much if you look at some of my pictures!!)
I take the point about the 'different' plants - I hadn't really considered that (though the cactus would still be in the background).
Perhaps we should get the lawyers in on it.... Noooooo!
