Hana's grafting 2023/2024

[Hanazono]

The grafting process of 6 scions was completed in this morning. They were also repotted into 95 mm square pots in this morning.
Two scions were failed the grafting. One is a tubercle and the other is a seedling.

The attached photo is one of scions, Ariocarpus retusus v furfuraceus cv Suguri cauliflower.

A scion, Ariocarpus fissuratus cv godzilla was eaten by a rat. Some part of the scion is still remained and I will keep it.

The grafting process of 9 scions was completed in this morning. They are 8 seedlings and 1 tubercle.

I am so appreciative of your posts and all I’ve learned from you sharing your experiences, so thank you so much for all your posts!

My music teacher had to trim her 20’ Mexican Fence Post and gifted me with 25 pups, which are mostly now all rooted (the ones where the spines are turning back to white have roots). In the Spring/Summer, I was thinking of repotting the most robust ones into single pots to use as grafting stock for some seedlings, but do you think that will work? I’ve searched this forum, and the internet in general, and I haven’t found anyone who seems to be using Mexican Fence Posts as a grafting stock, and I can’t help but to wonder if there’s a reason for that

I think the cacti on your photo are Lophcereus marginatus. I have never tried this species as grafting stock. I have an old book in relation to cactus grafting but this species is not included in possible grafting stocks.

I believe any cacti can be grafting stocks but this species will not meet to graft small seedlings. It will be a stock for small cacti, 2~3 cm in diameter.

Thanks Frank!! That makes sense and I’ll proceed accordingly! I’ll have to look into finding pereskiopsis for grafting anything smaller.

The grafting process of 4 off-sets and 3 tubercles was completed in this morning.

It has turned to a plant which is same one posted on 9th Jan this year. The scions is a tubercle of Pediocactus simpsonii v minor. I grafted additional 7 tubercles in this morning.

Hi Frank. Very amazing process on the Pediocactus. I just went back to the start on Dec 2 to see the single areole grafted. Then followed it along till today. It really grew fast! Only two months to a new plant!

It looked like there were more than one offset showing on your graft. Did only one grow? Did the one you showed today Feb 6 overgrow it?

The off-set was just one which has grown.
Yes it is same one. The current size of off-set is around 3 cm in diameter.

The grafting process of 7 Pediocactus simpsonii v minor tubercles was completed in this morning.
These tubercles showed high affinity to Pereskiopsis stocks. Even if the grafting was not perfect, soft tissue of both scion and stock were raised and was taken.

The grafting process of 7 scions was completed in this morning. Scions are 4 Astrophytum capricorne cv Daiou and 3 Ariocarpus retusus v furfuraceus cv Suguri cauliflower.

My friend visited my place and asked me to graft seedlings of capricorne cv Daiou. He attempted to graft many times but he could not make. I grafted for him.

The attached photo is a grafted Astrophytum capricorne cv Daiou.
