Will it survive?

Post by Msannic »

So this was my first cactus. I mistook the new growth fuzz for mealy bugs and maybe went a little crazy with the rubbing alcohol. Then I realized my mistake and let it be for a few months. It started to look like it wasn’t doing so well. The color was kind of dull and the cactus itself looked like it was slowly deflating.. so I recently dig it up to take a look at the roots and to my surprise they were gone.. not completely though. It looks like there are some strong roots coming off of one side which gives me hope that it could recover, but I don’t know if there are enough to sustain the whole plant. I put it in a MUCH smaller pot with better draining soil but don’t know if this was the right move or if there is anything I can do to help it regenerate! Any advice or knowledge is helpful! Thank you.

Overall it looks healthy, and the new roots look healthy too.
I don't think you have much to worry about.
Cacti like this can survive literally months without water if necessary.

If it's in a small pot with well draining soil, it should be fine. Water it only moderately over the autumn (more water if it's warm where you are, less if/when it gets colder, no water when it's cold).
