Re: Cultivation of a Dioscorea Elephantipes.
A quick update 8 days later. The vines have doubled in length. I have attached them loosely to individual stakes. The shorted vine grew towards the longer stem and intertwined itself to the longer vine and then grew to match its length. The both have grown to the sun.
The stubby vine growth has stopped but then another stubby vine has started. The last picture shows the vines after I had handled them. I don't think they like to be touched. They react quit quickly if you turn the pot. I'm going to stop playing with it.

Where are the leaves. Isn't the vine long enough to have leaves now.

Hi Dodi
If you look at the stems they have leaf buds. This is the mystery of this plant. How long does the vine need to grow before the leaf buds start to grow and open. As the vines grow they also produce more leaf buds. The tip of each vine has 3 or 4 leaf buds on it.
Can anyone add to this?

Maybe it’s just trying to reach bright sunny spot?
Re: Cultivation of a Dioscorea Elephantipes.
Quick question about that square terra cotta pot; where did you find it? I have a couple I got years ago. I use them to transition seedlings from the sowing pot, before they go in their own pots. I've broken a couple over the years and need a couple more.
I cannot remember where I got them back then.

Cactipack
So you grow yours with sun exposure? Morning, afternoon?
Last night it appeared a few of the leaf nods were starting to open and grow, like yours..

Hi Mike,
Mine does get quite a bit of sun. Direct morning and evening sun although I do try to shade the caudex by placing it behind taller pots. I originally had it sitting in dappled sun under a canopy but it didn't seem happy. When I moved it to a sunnier location it came out of dormancy and the vine took off.

They had a similarly named place in PHX, mostly painted and glazed pots though. I'll check out the CA operation to see if what the freight would be. I'm pretty sure I bought the ones I have locally.

It's been another 8 days . The Vines continue to grow. Uncurled they are probably over 5 feet long. Some of the leaf nodes are opening up. Others are now growing longer stems. It looks like the the 3 additional vines the plant started to grow have stopped and appear to be drying up.I put up a large thumb tack to give the vines support as they extend towards the sun. They are both wrapping themselves around it.

Re: Cultivation of a Dioscorea Elephantipes.
I found it interesting that when the shorter vine attached itself to the longer vine, the short vine grew faster and caught up in length.
It appears that the leaf nodes that have grown longer are splitting into 2 growing tips.
Crystal I'm with you on exposure to sun. Yesterday the plant accidently was soaked and waterlogged. I physically moved it to a bright sunny location for about 6 hours and I was surprised how quickly it dried and I also noticed a spurt of growth. The vines were unsupported and like an alien monster I watched them turn towards another plant to get support. Wild stuff.

Re: Cultivation of a Dioscorea Elephantipes.
The one mistake I made was not measuring the caudex when I first got the plant. I think it has grown. It looks like it is filling the pot a bit more and it has grown taller.
What do you all think?

So do they normally lay across bushes and other plants in habitat? or do they climb trees, or something? Your plant definitely looks like the caudex has grown from the initial pictures.
Not sure how something like this would do in AZ, so I've avoided them. They certainly are interesting.
