My cacti and other plants

Post by Sarraceniacrazy »

Honestly, I don't have many but I have an obsessive personality and I've ordered a variety of seeds. So, thats probably what this thread will consist of for a while. Seedlings. If I get good germination lol. I'll probably post random pics of other stuff I grow from seeds too.

I did pick up a mammillaria spinossisimus at Lowes the othe day. I think it's a pilcayensis but I'm just going off of newbie research. It looks like 3 seed grown plants to me but, again, im green haha.

Wonderful pics, and it looks like you're off to a good start! If this would be helpful to you, it's good to compare notes with other growers here on the forum. You're among friends, so please don't hesitate to ask questions on the Cultivation forum for cacti and the Succulent Growing Help forum for succulents. By the way -- cacti and succulents have different cultivation requirements, so that's why I wanted to point out the distinction between the forum for cacti and the one for succulents.

Happy growing, and please keep posting! :)

Thank you! I've been reading as many threads as I can for the last month then decided to join so I could access everything. Tons of good info here. I learned how to germinate cactus, why the seedlings were turning red on me, everything right here. I use the search function a lot. I don't think I'll grow many succulents. I have hens and chicks, semps and a euphorbia(learned that today) but they don't interest me like cacti. I hope I'm in the right forum.

Thanks, again, and I'll update often.

That's wonderful. By the way is there any special requirement for this plant.

Thank you! 50/50 peat/silica sand or perlite, full sun and keep them wet. No fertilizer ever. They feed themselves. They're really easy to grow once you get the hang of it. Thanks for stopping by!

Guess I must've been a really weird kid to my classmates when I was 12 in 1970 -- that's when I fell in love with cacti, and carnivorous plants not long after. Small cactus collection on the patio, and a terrarium with CP in my bedroom. I was pretty bad at growing both kinds of plants, although if I had the space for it, my skills with cacti would get me into learning how to grow CP the right way. Sadly, my apartment is too small, but I still find them incredibly fascinating.

I don't know where you live, but if you ever visit the Los Angeles area, you'll want to spend at least a day at the Huntington Library's botanical gardens. Their desert collection is incredible, and the desert greenhouse may give you dreams. Even better -- the Huntington's Conservatory has a bog collection with pretty much everything a CP fan would enjoy.

They are addictive. Cacti and carnivores. I'm obsessed with the CPs. Just so deadly. Then the cacti are so deadly looking. Eventhough they grow in opposite habitats I think they compliment one another.

I'm in KY and if I'm ever out that way I'll take your advice. Thanks!
