I was examining a recently bought juvenile melocactus azureus today and noticed a small red mite-like insect crawling around on it. There are small reddish-orange marks near the base of the cactus which I suspect to be tell-tale signs of mite damage, though I can’t be sure.
I want to give it a pesticide spray as a precautionary measure. I’ve got malathion and 70% rubbing alcohol at home. Has anyone ever had any experience spraying any of these on melocacti or cacti in general? I don’t want to damage the epidermis through phototoxicity or the likes.
Am I being overly paranoid? Should I just mist with plain water? We currently experiencing day temperatures averaging 40+ Celsius and 90% humidity.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
