Have some seed pods for what I believe is Austrocylindropuntia vestita, ripening. They are turning red, anyone have the species flower and set fruit who could confirm ripe fruits are red?
Any idea as to how many seeds are likely to have set per fruit?
Have uploaded two early photos to the species page.
Cheers

Yes, mine usually, though not always, sets fruit and they are pink. I haven't cut one open for a few years but from memory I'd say they contain 15-20 seeds (they're fairly large seeds for a cactus). Germination is usually quite good. Such a shame that it's so easy to propagate from cuttings anyway!

Ever tried hybridising it?

Seedpods ripening, the seedpod with the ring around it has had some pereskiopsis pollen used on the flower.

Be most interesting if a hybrid results.Cheers

Given how easily it sets seed I think it's self-fertile. The only time I sowed the seeds they came true.

Any pics of the seedlings? What do you do with the extra seed?
