Eriosyce simulans is so named because it looks similar to a Copiapoa that grows with it and they are hard to tell apart out of flower. However apart from E. simulans having a red flower and the Copiapoa a yellow one, simulans has bristles on the flower tube, whereas Copiapoa has a naked tube. The two plants below show the difference as the flower ages. The one on the right has only just opened with the filaments clasped tightly around the style, whereas the one on the left has been open a couple of days and the filaments have grown and spread.
