A few Cacti of Utah

Post by MJPapay »

Had an abbreviated vacation to Utah, caught a cold on the airplane on the way, so had to end the trip early to recuperate. Anyway, it was a fabulous adventure, with the non-stop picturesque landscape and flora and fauna that overwhelmed and numbed the mind. My mind anyway.

I will not bore you with all the landscape photos, and wildflower photos (over 1000 photos taken), but WILL bore you with some cactus photos.

Opuntia basilaris was common enough at Zion. Very pretty. [EDIT: This is now known as O. aurea - with O. basilaris parentage in the past - per Dean].

Opuntia polyacantha could be found in different flower colors, with varying shades of pink, yellow, and even white (though I did not photograph this last one as I would have had to trod all over the desert soil crust to get a decent snap).

Great photos, look forward to more. O. basilaris proper doesn't grow in Zion, does it? Dean?

I believe these are known as Opuntia x aurea (basilaris x polyacantha hyrbid). I could be wrong of course. [EDIT: Opuntia phaecantha - per PeterTheCactusGuy - THANKS]

In the town of Moab, Utah, we found a wonderful desert wildflower garden street-side, with a stunning specimen of Echinocereus fendleri.

Peterb - An interesting question you inserted amidst my photos, the answer to which I do not know.

What should this specimen be called if not Opuntia basilaris?

They were common enough along the trail. Their beautiful flowers most welcomed.

ok, I am not the best expert of Utah cacti, Dean Stock would be.. but, here is what I think. I think the first yellow flowered Opuntia you have labeled as O. x aurea is actually O. phaeacantha. The pink flowered O. basilaris is a hybrid with O. aurea. The next three are O. engelmannii, and the lost O. basilaris is also a hybrid this time I think with O. polycantha.. Notice the spines on the margin of the pad. (It could also be with O. aurea, or maybe the O. polycantha X O. aurea hybrid as well) .. my .02 cents. If Dean Stock finds this thread maybe he can shed some light, and probably tell me how wrong I am ;) hahaha However, no matter the names of the plants, beautiful photos, thanks for sharing :)
Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.
