euphorbia horrida noorsveldensis

Post by Mike »

With all the cacti blooming, I haven't paid much attention to the succulents. But I saw this new growth yesterday (I obviously had missed a lot) and really liked the different colors. The difference is more startling than the picture suggests.

What causes the red spination in the new growth.

What does noorsveldensis means?

Thanks Mike

Hi Mike

Your first question... It happens to my Euphorbia baioensis too but there doesn't seem to be anything wrong. I put it in the full sun though, maybe that's the cause.

Noorsveldensis means "from Noorsveld". Noorsveld is a place in the Cape Province.

Greetings

Noord means north in Afrikaans. Dieter, does Noors mean anything in Vlaams?

Mike, it may be a place name, although I wonder if it's a misspelling. Perhaps "Noordsvelt" or something? The North Plains? Velt in Afrikaans is like a plain, prarie, savanah etc...

Regards
Tim

Noors does'nt mean anything in Vlaams (from Norway but I don't think you'll find a lot of Euphorbia's there  )
Noord also means North in Vlaams

the red color of the spines will disappear with age

Well, South-African is a language that sprouted from the Dutch spoken by discoverers. Noorsveld indeed probably means from a field in the north. "Veld" is field in Dutch, Noors comes from "noord", meaning north.

Well, noors seems like a "contraction" from noords.
