Slow Server?

Post by daiv »

I haven't heard from anyone about this and so I figured it was just me. The last 4-5 days or so, the site has been painfully slow for me, but other places on the web are not any slower.

Is anyone else noticing a significant difference in speed the last few days? Please take into consideration other web sites. If everything is slow that is different than if only CactiGuide.com is slow.

Slow, slow, slow. I think it is the whole of Cactus Mall, or perhaps just part of it. Elsewhere is fine.

Agreed, it is very slow. And it is only this site. I just assumed there were problems somewhere along the lines and that they would be worked out...didn't want to make a comment because I have no idea what all is entailed in running this and am thankful for it no matter the speed! But yes...it has been slow for a few days now lol.

Thanks Ian, I will send a note to Tony Mace. There probably is an endless loop in somebody's code or sessions that won't let go.

It would be especially odd if only CactiGuide was slow and not the rest of the sites on Cactus-Mall.

I just saw that. Over the last couple days, I noticed some spots of normal performance and then slowness again!

Daiv,
I have noticed this too, but I have a crappy connection. I was also getting disconnected from the ISP a lot. I thought that it was maybe from the WI-FI network I am on, but then again.. it might have been on Cactiguide.com (or for that matter Cactusmall) Whatever the case it is running a lot better lately.:)

BTW I do have an idea of what it takes to run a server so I do not in anyway BLAME you.

That's good, because I don't run the server, just the website.

I'm a little late with this, but i noticed it last Monday and then today it was terrrible. I have several sites up on his server as well as this one. All of them were bad. It is his server, no doubt.

Thanks Buck. I sent Tony an e-mail in case you haven't already.

I'm sure they will get it sorted out.

It will be helpful if there is a specific time that it is slow. This would indicate a cron job running that is taking up too many resources. It seems fine since shortly after my post. If it is bad again tomorrow, then I'll send Tony Mace another e-mail.

The best I can offer as specific times go is "in the evening" UK-time... I'd put a stab at between 8pm and midnight, though I obviously didn't check every half hour or whatever in that period.

I had initially assumed that the problem was at my end, because my university's sites were/are struggling too - but that said, they're not the most stable of things at the best of times!

these are 2 times when it was running slow,

Thursday .....13:30 ......6964 kbps (871kB/s)
Friday ..11:20 ..........6951 kbps (869kB/s)

times are UK summer time, days are last week, figures are my download speeds, i ran download speed tests to see if it was the site or my connection, as you can see my connection was fast therefore the server was running slow.

hob.

anyone wanting to test their connection speed can do it here
