Don't know what it is

Post by nuclear_squirrel »

Image I am not sure what this one is. I had a green variety last year, it died with the really bad frost we got this winter.

Image This one I just don't know what it is. All I know is it's a succulent

1. Huernia schneideriana? It's gotten alot of sun, hence the red color. Give it some shade and it'll green right up.

2. Tylecodon? Senecio?

#2 is definitely senecio - the full name eludes me for the moment. I will get back to you later on that one...

If I were convinced that the 2nd is a senecio, I would call it S. talinoides. I'm not sure that it isn't a tylecodon however.

You'll need a bloom on the 1st to pin the name down. It looks a lot like several genera of those carrion flower plants, let alone specific species.

The last one looks like a Cotyledon orbiculata v. flanaganii that I have. I thought it was a Senecio until it flowered. It is in bud right now.

Are the leaves on your plant pretty thick? Or can you tell us the size of the pot it's in or the length of the leaves?

I should've asked first, is there a (sort of) see-through stripe on the length of the leaves? If so, then, yes...Senecio, as Buck & Harry have given the name.

Here are those stripes on an unknown Senecio. The function is very clear, I think.

The stripes are to let light out of the leaves to prevent them overheating?

there are no lines on it - the leaves are about 4 inches long on the bottom ones, and it's in a 4 inch pot.

N squirrel, I enlarged the pic of your plant & it seems the leaves on your plant do have those "lines".

It is not a colored line, but rather a strip with more translucence than the other part of the leaf (like in Harry's pic). Hold it up to the light & see if you can notice a difference in the leaves. It does look like a Senecio & S. cylindricus (S. talinoides ssp. cylindricus) seems likely.

Take a look at this picture. The picture is not that perfect, but maybe you can see the stripes.
