Dustin's 2010 photos

Post by dustin0352 »

Well like most others I am going to start a new 2010 photo page to help keep the general forum space cleaned up. Here I will post all my blooms, new growth, and new additions. Hope all enjoy.

To start off the first actual blooms of 2010. I already posted these but feel I should put them up again as the beauty is amazing.

Can you see it? I barely did while making my greenhouse rounds this morning. Smallest bloom I have seen so far.

And the anticipation of this guy opening is killing me. This will be my first brown colored flower. I will post pics once it opens.

Excellent! It's already early spring in your greenhouse. Looking forward to that Glandulicactus flower.

It is amazing how many similarities that crassihamatus has to Ferocactus. I think all you'd have to do is take away that groove on the tubercle.

Edit: I hope that comparission doesn't make you crazy Peter! While they are listed here as "Sclerocactus", I won't be moving them to "Ferocactus" any time soon.

Daiv I too have thought how close they look to ferocactus. Another thing I have found about them that is different from the Ferocactus (well atleast the ones I own) is that the Ferocactus has flattend spines, while the Sclerocactus spines on this one are round/tubular. That and the groove you mentioned are all the differences I can find.

Dustin,
This is a good illustration of the challenges in cactus taxonomy. ssp crassihamatus at first glance looks more like a young Ferocactus than it does to ssp. wrightii in the same species!

The seedling photos look identical to my F. latispinus seedlings!! Now I see how hard it can be to correctly name certain cacti with just a photo. CRAZY!

The E. micromeris is very pretty, Dustin.
Which species of Turbinicarpus are this? My guess is T. bonatzii.
