Succulent from Teotenango Edit: Sedum oxypetalum

Post by Dalesmicro »

When I first came to Toluca to live, I visited the Teotenango Pyramids which are located between Toluca and Ixtapan de la Sal, in a region of small corn fields. The local farmers continue to farm there even in areas where there are ruins. I took a small cutting from what appeared to be a very old succulent about 4 feet tall with lichens growing on some of the older branches. When I returned a year latter the farmers had cut the plants down, replacing them with another cornfield.

My cutting is still growing and I am wondering if it can be identified from the following pictures. Thanks, Dale

Sedum oxypetalum would be my guess. If not, definitely a tree sedum of some kind.

Hi there,
Sedum oxypetalum would be my guess.
I fully agree with that, it looks like S. oxypetalum indeed. More, checking the distribution I have read in Sedum: cultivated stonecrops By Ray Stephenson that it is even indigenous to the state of Mexico.

Cheers,
