Lego's Cactus Collection
Hey Cacti Guide! I've been lurking around here for a while after catching the collector's bug, and I thought I would go ahead and post pics of my collection so far. Man, when you catch the cactus bug, you get hit hard
I'll say right up front that most of these are probably going to be misidentified in some way. I'm lucky to have 3 Lowe's within 20 minutes of my house, all with a good selection of cacti and succs, but I've already found that a lot are mislabeled. So if you see any that blatantly have the wrong name, please let me know! I can grow em, I just can't ID em.
I'll post each grouping in separate posts, so as to not have one massive post.
Mammillaria and Rebutia
#1 Rebutia fiebrigii.
#2 M. elegans
#3 M. rhodantha
#4 M. spinosissima
#5 M. pringlei
#6 M. rhodantha
#7 M. bombycina
#8 M. gracilis fragilis

Welcome to the forums.
The first one is a rebutia maybe muscula or if you prefer, Rebutia fiebrigii.
I think the one you say is "bought as M. pringlei. Hmmmmmm..." is just M. rhodantha.
The rest look ok to me, someone else can/will correct me.
All the names in the second batch look good.
Not bad for lowes(altmans plants)they have a bad track record with id's, at least they have in the past.

Hey Tony,
R. fiebrigii looks to be exactly right. The flowers had a citrus-like scent when they were blooming.
My local Lowe's always have a pretty nice selection of succs, but you're right: they aren't too good at getting correct ID's.
Could all of those Gymnos be the same species? Very interesting. I'm still pretty new to cacti, it's actually kind of a (brace yourself) side-hobby for me. Here's my true addiction:

NICE!
Never went the Fresh water planted tank route, I went from 60 gal f/w comunity tank with plastic plants to full blown s/w reef aquarium.
The reef is gone now but still keep a bunch of rasboras (one of my all time f/w fav's) in my 100 gallon fresh water / cacti propagater.

Greets legomaniac. Once bitten by the bug there is no turning back... sorry to have to break the news to you, so you better get used to it, on this forum we offer support to all cactoholics!! so welcome.
You've got some really beaut plants there, great to see them flowering for you.
Just to add my 10 cents worth, the plant you have labled N. grusonii, is actually a ferocactus, not sure which species, maybe something like glaucescens.
Happy growing, CP.

Thanks Tony! I see you and I have the same taste in fish. Harlequin Rasboras are beautiful.
Thanks GardenBed, yep, nearly everything in my collection came from Lowe's. All of my local ones have good selection, but they all severely overwater them, like almost 3 times a week.
Hi Lancer! Got everything numbered for ya.
Thanks for the ID strukto. I'll go change that now.
Thanks CP. My first cactus was a grafted Moon cactus (which I bought because of the huge bright red bloom on top. I know better now ). After that one, there was definitely no turning back.
You know, I actually have that Fero labeled as a Fero in the pot, but for some reason I had it in my mind as a Notocactus.
Peter and Corona, thanks!
I have a decent collection of succulents too. At some point, I'll head over to the General Succs forum and start a thread there too.
