Does teh name "Pithya" ring a bell?

Post by wattersmichael »

I am attempting to identify a particular strain of cactus found in Central America. It is grown in arbors similar to grapes, bears fist-sized fruit and is used in juices.
I have never seen its name in print, however; it is called "pithya" as best as I can transcribe.
Is anyone familiar with this variety and can someone offer any more information?
In advance, I thanks you, Mike

Hi,

There are 2 different "Pitayas".
The red fruit comes from Hylocereus Undatus.
The plant are often used as a grafting stock.
The Yellow fruit comes from Selenicerus Megalanthus.
Maybe some of those plants are the one you have.

Hi Mike:

I Think that you are in a big trouble. In Mexico we have more than 20 species of plants with a fruit that people call pitayas:

All are cacti

All the frut are round-ovlated (like the ones from Opuntia)

All the fruits are edible

In each region, the pitaya (fruit) come fron a diferent species.
