Hello from Brazil

Post by Dalton Holland Baptista »

Hi,

I live in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil, about 100 miles north of Capricorn Tropic. I have been growing orchids since 76 but always liked cacti too. Four years ago I moved from an apartment in São Paulo to a house here and now I can have them. I planted about ten of them in the garden and that was all I had but, last November, I went to an orchid show in Joinville, SC, and there was this guy selling all sort of miniature cacti. I got 70 of them (well, probably all very ordinary I just found the names of a couple but with time will look for all). One died soon after, but so far I managed to keep the others alive. They are outside in the garden taking about full sun all day and water just when it rains. Here it rains about every ten days but during the winter sometimes we have forty days without a drop. Actually during the whole winter it rains only three or four times. Well, just wanted to say hi.

Dalton

These are some of them:

Wow, that's really extra super close. No. They are in pots. lol. BTW, I should thing of repoting some of them but all the stuff I see on potting formulas here are not aroud. Is it possible to use anything easy as sand, charcoal, rocks and and ordinary potting soil?

Love the "cactus skyline" picture!

That's a good way to jump-start your collection. Now you live in cactus country. There are so many cacti in Brazil. If you ever go out to see them. Take lots of pics and we'll drool all over them!

I too want to welcome you to the cactus and succulent forums. You already do have a nice collection of various cacti. I hope, that you are going to enjoy the forum members and the atmosphere in general.

Harald

P.S.: By the way, there are a good number of people on this forum who grow cacti and/or succulents and also do grow orchids! :)
