Re: Propagation Ariocarpus fom seed
It is a very nice fissuratus.
I am not sure how long a fissuratus can survive but 20 years old is a good age and the plant is maintained neatly.
I think fissuratus is in flower relatively in young age.
5~6 years old is the flowering age.

Re: Propagation Ariocarpus fom seed
An ariocarpus retusus cv Shinkawa Tama Zouge was in flower in the afternoon.
It is 1st flowering for the cactus.
I sowed seed on 11th August 2005.
The size is 12 cm in diameter currently.
It should be in flower earlier but this one experienced various issues during growing.

A rid of plastic box which accommodated in Ariocarpus seedlings was deteriorated and broken.
I bought a new one yesterday.
The original one was clear and covered by a 50% shade cloth but the new one is "pearl" and I do not use any shade clothes.

Re: Propagation Ariocarpus fom seed
Seedlings of Ariocarpus grow very slowly but they will gain the body size and they need repotting.
It is spring in here and I will start to repot seedlings of Ariocarpus.
The photo is A. retusus v bicolor, sown seeds on 12th October 2012.
They are in 5 cm square tubes. I will select 20 and will move them to 6.5 cm square pots.

20 seedlings of retusus v bicolor were repotted in 6.5 cm square pots in this morning.
Re: Propagation Ariocarpus fom seed
Looks good, they actually look bigger than I thought for 6 years growth. I guess you probably have all the environmental factors and light dialed in perfectly, but still. Are you growing any aztekium? I just sowed some seeds and I wonder what they'll look like 10 or 20 years from now. Also did geohintonia and blossfeldiana, all those real slow ones; I figure I'll be alive for another 50 years or so (at least) so I should get started early.
Re: Propagation Ariocarpus fom seed
G'morning cosmotoad,
I use a special propagation technique for Ariocarpus seedlings, which was developed by a Japanese.
It is able to accelerate the growing speed of Ariocarpus seedlings.
I have Aztekium rittri, hintonii and Geohintonia mexicana, all flowering sizes.
Seeds were sown in 2006.
Since these seedlings grow very slowly, I grafted seedlings and degrafted later.

Re: Propagation Ariocarpus fom seed
These are an other Ariocarpus seedlings sown seeds in 2012. They are retusus cv tri-fingers.
Unfortunately they have insect attack scars which may never disappear.
I repotted them in this afternoon.
Before repotting, in 5 cm square tubes
After repotted, in 6.5 cm square pots
I still keep may Ariocarpus seedlings which have to repot as shown on the photo.
They will go to 5 cm square tubes.

Re: Propagation Ariocarpus fom seed
I have continued repotting of seedlings.
35 seedlings were selected including seedlings in 10 cm square pot shown on the photo posted yesterday.
Seedlings are hybrid, elongatus x fissuratus.
Removed from pots

Re: Propagation Ariocarpus fom seed
I found a fissuratus seedling sown seed in 2012 in a wet-box.
The seedling was never repotted since the germination.
I repotted it and removed from the wet-box.

Re: Propagation Ariocarpus fom seed
On 06 July 2018 I sowed several pots of various cactus, including Ariocarpus. At 1 month I had taken them out of the bag to try grafting. This pot (below) fell behind the shelf and I could not move the shelf because it is so heavy. The seedlings spilled and were lost--or so I thought!
Last week I found these. They have been angled on the south windowsill for almost 10 months. Only 8 seedlings along the edge survived. I presume they got the least sun and most water because of the angle.
If they got any significant water at all, it was runoff from a big Kalanchoe that was not moved until last week and whose pot was pushed up against the window. As far as I remember I watered it only twice all winter. So these seedlings got very little water and lots of sun. I thought they had spilled and died!
Well, are these even worth saving? I guess it can't hurt to put them under shade and give them lots more water! I already watered them once in this picture and they swelled up within a day so I guess their roots still function...

G'morning Aloinopsis,
It seems they are health now. I hope they grew continuously in this season.

Seedlings of Ariocarpus grow slowly.
The photo is seedlings of A. retusus v furfuraceus cv Suguri cauliflower.
Seeds were sown on 19th July 2016.
I removed all fungi covering over the top-soil and watered in this morning.

Hanazono, I notice the grid fence or wiring in most of your posts. Is that to keep them off the bottom of the container or keep them seperated?
