Unless that is by some chance you find somebody daft enough to buy it, then everything is for sale! For some, the higher the price the greater the desirability.

Haageocereus lanugispinus is often considered a synonym.

H. lanugispinus went around in the 1970's in the UK under Backeberg's name Pygmaeocereus densiaculeatus until it was realised it was a Haageocereus and that Ritter's name therefore took priority. Even I had one at that time!

Interestingly the web says about that shops expensive cactus:-

"It's a plant called Haageocereus tenuis, critically endangered plant that we acquired from a researcher who spent most of his life studying rare Opuntias in Argentina and Patagonia."

Strange since it is Peruvian, unless he did also visit Peru?

The old saying "a fool and his money are soon parted" still holds good. The moral is always research your subject on the Web before you pay stupid prices for plants listed as "rare" simply because it is often stuck onto plants on EBAY to entice the less knowledgeable or profligate to buy.

I have just been told H. lanugispinus as Pygmaeocereus densiaculeatus was being sold grafted in a 1998/9 UK plant catalogue for £2.50p (= $3.46, = €2.91).

Do you think it is a way of speculating?
He says at a certain point it began as a joke and eventually the cactus is not for sale. A case of reverse psychology?

Thank you Ohugal and DaveW Hope I don’t offend anyone who possibly own one, but it isn’t very attractive to look at, at least not in my opinion . Ah..all the RARE and VERY RARE plants on ebay..I have a couple of RARE H. salicornioides in my possession, I had no idea these were considered to be rare, before I saw the ad on ebay ...

From the straggly look of the "rare" plant and a few constrictions in its growth why don't they chop some off and propagate it? Maybe just a case of "look what I have"? A dealer on the Continent would have dozens for sale in a year or so just propagating from that one.

Not sure it is as rare as they are pretending, but the press love a good story even if not based on fact. There was even a better plant of it in one of the UK's National Shows.

A bit OT perhaps but reading articles and seeing pics from shows is interesting for me. I have never ( and will probably never either) been to a show or a market for cacti and succulents, so reading about them is the next best thing. I do wonder which rules there are for the public though? Is there a strict ‘ look only, do not touch’ rule? Having a lot of people handling the plants seems hasardious, both with possible damage in mind but not at least the danger of spreading any pests? Were should I look for more show articles?

Yes "do not touch" or "do not touch these plants bite!" are usually signs up at shows. With the preoccupation with health and safety in the UK these days presumably some form of warning would have to be displayed?

People seem to have a very liberal view of ownership with regards to plants so I would hope that everyone with rare and expensive plants take the necessary precautions.

In Singapore, for example, tearing off entire sections of plants for propagation (i.e., stealing cuttings) is considered 'damage to property' - a miscellaneous crime that is often not chargeable. For it to be considered theft, our delinquent(s) would have to carry the entire pot away with intent.
