Spiral cacti list

Post by Shane »

Despite the interest spirals generate, I can't find a single, comprehensive list of cactus species with a spiral form. I keep finding more after I think I know them all. I'm creating this thread to hopefully make a more complete list based on everyone's knowledge

For this list, I'll consider a cactus to be a spiral if a rib on a mature plant can be expected to make at least one revolution around the cactus (from bottom to top). Or put more simply, it looks like a drill bit. This excludes some ambiguous cases, and some plants on ebay that spiral very slightly but are labeled 'spiralis' to increase their value (I won't dignify this with further mention here). Here's the list I have so far:

Astrophytum ornatum 'Spiral' (possibly heritable)
Cereus sp 'Spiralis' (All descended from one individual, supposedly C. validus. Many are hybrids now)
Eulychnia castanea 'Spiralis'
Lepismium crusiforme 'Spiralis'
Pachycereus schottii 'Spiralis' (there's a spiral version of the monstrose form)

And a few others called 'Spiral' or 'Spiralis' that don't meet my definition:

Astrophytum myriostigma 'Spiral Ribs' (ribs don't make a full revolution)
Notocactus werdemannianus 'Spiralis' (not actually a spiral)

Please comment with ones I've missed. I'll update the list

Only cacti?

Do spiraling leaves deserve a place on this list too? There are quite some African bulbs with spiraling leaves. Albuca spiralis and Trachyandra tortilis, just to mention the most obvious ones...

I think they deserve their own list! They're very interesting plants in their own right

My Euphorbia spiralis is awesome. Maybe my favorite plant. Saw it in the window of a dumpy old gas station a couple of years ago. All dusty. They sold it to me for $7.50 I believe. I've never been able to find another.

I wasn't aware of that species. Here's a grown up, it looks amazing:

In theory any cactus could produce a spiral form Shane. For instance Mammillaria's already have their tubercles arranged in a spiral form and they are the equivalent of ribs in other cacti. How many cacti do obviously spiral is open to question, but an Astrophytum ornatum of mine has a slow spiral in it's ribs compared to another one beside it.

I suppose you are really after a list of those with a pronounced spiral rather than a gradual one?

Some Parodias have spiral ribs, eg schwebsiana, mairanana, salmonea, subterranea, maassii etc...
Some Echinocactus horizonthalonius also.
