G'morning AusNick89,

My standard procedure of seedling grafting with Pereskiopsis stock is:

1. Cut an off-shoot of Pereskiopsis, 15 cm length
2. Insert the off-shoot into wet potting-mix in a 5 cm square tube immediately for the rooting
3. 7 days after the insertion, a seedling is grafted. No roots are developed on the stock at that time.
4. 10 days after the grafting, the stock with scion is ropotted in a 9 cm square pot.

There are no roots on the stock when the scion is grafted. This can minimise the sap flow.
The potting-mix is wet completely between the above process 2 and 4.
I can see some roots development of the stock during in the process 4.

Cheers Frank, I think I'll try your method when I'm next ready to graft!

Hi Frank.
from my last experience Hylocereus grow much faster the the Pereskiopsis, am i missed something? they grow under same condition, the pereskiopsis get much more water, and the plant one the Hylocerrus twice bigger...

G'morning oriky,

According to my experience, both stocks give a similar growing rate of scions if the grafting was done well.
Even if you use same stock, the growing rate is varied. It will show more than 2 times different.
If the joint union was formed almost perfectly, both stocks will give a similar growing rate of scions.

Before 2008, I used Hylocereus stocks because Pereskiopsis was not available in here.
Both stocks are made by cuttings.

Hylocereus stocks were infected a virus and made brown/black spots on the body. This problem also moved up scions.
Off-shoots formed from infected stock also remained same problem and so I could not use Hylocereus stocks.
New off-shoots showed very clean body but spots appeared later.

I use Pereskiopsis cuttings but I can not see this problem so far.

I water weekly on both stocks in the growing season.

A visitor from Europe gave me 2 species of Ariocarpus seeds in January.
I sowed these seeds on 8th January.
The germination of these seeds were relatively slow.
The germination rate of one species, retusus cv tri-fingers was good but the other, pectinatus was very poor.

I selected 3 seedlings, 2-tri-fingers and 1-pectinaus, and grafted as a trial on 6th in this month because seedlings were very young.
Stocks are unrooted Pereskiopsis.

The grafting process were completed in this morning and they were repotted.

I tried to increase red colour and pollinated the pollen of a red flowering asterias.
12 seedlings were grafted.
The photo is one of them, taken the photo in this afternoon.

G'morning oriky,

Since they are grafted young plants, my judgement may not be accurate but I think:

They are not Hanazono kabuto.
They do not show the character of Super kabuto.
They are mixed the gene of Miracle kabuto, the flecking shape gives some evidence.

Flowers come our from only areoles on photos. Flowers of hanazono kabuto come out from everywhere including rib-bottom.
Super kabuto forms excessive flecking on rib-bottom. Plants on photos do not show this evidence.
It is not thick but the shape of flecking is that of miracle kabuto.

Starshape is not a cultivar of asterias. It is just a shape of asterias body.
Hanazono kabuto, Super kabuto, Miracle kabuto and also standard asterias have starshape body.

Yes, rib-bottoms are pushed out more than rib-top on 2nd plant but the degree is not so significant.
I think you can not say "This is a starshape" with this degree at moment.

Thank you for your kindly answer.

when you mean mixed with the gene of miracle, you mean there is any chance they are real miracle? (im think there is some miracle in the source of the seeds) - or becuase of they arrived to flower age they appearance not changed and this is how the plant will be all their life?

one more quesition, it's normal this amount of flower buds? i never remember i saw something like this...
i will post a photos when the flower will open :)

The miracle kabuto shows a mutation of flecking and starts to show thick flecking suddenly.

I do not know the age of your scions but it will start to show the mutation around 5 years old.
If it is younger than 5 years old, none know it is true miracle or not.
I mean your plants may turn to true miracle kabutos.

It is not special multi-flowering on grafted asterias.
Any types of stock will give more flowers than that of own-root plant but Hylocereus and Harrisia will affect significantly.

Hi Frank,

What substrate do you use for sowing Astrophytum seed?

Thank you

G'day rypasaur,

I think it is not necessary but I mix various materials.
Zeorite (1~2 mm): 1
Clay grain (1~2 mm): 1
Coarse sand (~ 1mm): 1
Organic base plant seed rising mix: 1

Zeorite is a crashed permeable rock
Clay grain is shifted cat litter.
It is not necessary the organic material for the seed germination but I keep seedlings in same pot for 1 year at least.
Organic material is for the growing of seedlings after germination.

Since seeds of Astrophytum are relatively large, I use top dressing.
The top dressing is Zeorite, 2~4 mm size.
Seeds are covered over by the top dressing.
