Can you tell me the ID of the purple sulcorebutia on the very left of picture 172458.

A friend gave me an offset this spring and I could not ID it, but it looks exactly like it !

K.W. - Love looking at your Astrophytum. Last summer, when we did the "rescue" from our deceased club member's GH, I adopted an old, scarred veteran that nobody wanted. I guess it wasn't perfect. Repotted, cleaned up the mealy bugs & today the old man thanked me with a flower. Quite surprised to see that the flower is pink - is this a different variety? Excuse the cross-post in ID; I figured later I should just ask the man with a GH full of them. TIA, Sue

Good morning Sue,
this is an Astrophytum ornatum.
In my Astrophytum ornatum I have none with reddish bloom.
And I have never heard or read of a red-flowered form.
However, some yellow flowers - if they fade - on the second or third day become reddish.
If the bloom was already red - when first opened - it is a rare plant.
Red flowers I only know of Astrophytum asterias, breeding forms.

Best wishes

Thanks K.W. Yesterday was the first bloom since he was rescued last summer. We had heavy rain last night & haven't been outside to see if the bloom is still intact. When our club member Dr. Barad died there were a lot of plants no one wanted because they weren't perfect show quality. He had been a noted exhibitor at the Philadelphia Flower Show. At the end, it became "take it or it will go in the dumpster". Many of the "rejects" have said thank you with new growth & flowers. I wonder if this will set seeds. Should I try to save them? Here is a side view showing the (age?) damage.

Good evening Sue,

yes, that is an old "gentleman".
If there should be seeds, reap in any case.

Today I picked some Astrophytum seeds of my plants. . . #-o
