1 Cactus offset different color
I have a grafted gymno in purple, one offset is neon pink with purple mottling. Are offsets supposed to be different, all the rest are normal purple.
Re: 1 Cactus offset different color
Guess it depends on the genes it takes pink (or red) and blue to make purple
Id like to see a picture if u could post one.
And maybe someone will have an answer

That is not so incommon. This kind of mutations are infact quite normal. You don't know what kind of parents it has. Maybe one of them was more pink like. Or it may be some kind of own mutation.
Re: 1 Cactus offset different color
My guess would be a mutation in the chorophyll, or variegation(these could be two differend things though)

Will this offset grow on its own roots?
Re: 1 Cactus offset different color
not if it hasn't chlorophyll, and that seems the case with yours. It may be that only the outer layer doesn't have chorophyll, so in that case it has chlorophyll, but only when it gets older(i have one like that)

Do you mean it might change to a darker color as it grows?majcka wrote:It is not necesary for it to look like that its whole life.
Re: 1 Cactus offset different color
It is possible. I have one on its own roots which changes color through a year. I had it orange last fall and almost whole winter, then I was searching for it some day in the summer and I noticed it is almost brown. I had much trouble to figure it out it is the same plant.keithp2012 wrote:Do you mean it might change to a darker color as it grows?majcka wrote:It is not necesary for it to look like that its whole life.
Re: 1 Cactus offset different color
Usually the colorful gymnos used as moon cacti die after a while when rooted on there own, cause they need something to support their lack of chlorophyll, but I'd be curious to see yours maja, as for the bitty pink one its prob reverting back to one of the parent plants that looked more pink, just like how traits in human's can skip a generation with hair, eye color..etc...etc... Goodluck with your gymno babies
