North-central Californian grower
Re: North-central Californian grower
actually, if you look closer you'll see it's even TRI-colored, yellow throat, red inner petals, purple outer petals
most remarkable flowers of the whole genus!

I'll grow it as long as it doesn't have glochids. Gaudy flowers a plus.

A dazzling display, I must say. Thanks for sharing. I will be getting a new, professionally built greenhouse and I hope I'll be able to get some flowers like those you've been sharing. At what temperature do you winter them over? Or do you separate them to give them their own "microclimates"?
Catch a falling star--but don't try it with a cactus!

Hey Fanaticactus
Thanks for your kind assessment. My collection is quite small compared to the pros on this site!
Where I live, I only experience about 20 hard frost nights (below 0C, 32F) nights per year. I have a small heater tasked with keeping the plants about 5C (41F) as a minimum. The only plant I bring indoors for the winter is my sole Melocactus. If I can't grow the plants with non-hero efforts I won't try.

You and I seem to live by the same caveat: Survival Of The Fittest! I find it too difficult to deal with fussy cacti, having been a teacher for 40 years and having to deal with fussy students and all they bring.BarryRice wrote:Hey Fanaticactus

While the cat's away!
I just got home from a week's photogràphy trip to the desert, just to find out that while I've been gone, the kids have been up to shenanigans!

Gack! 116F in the back yard. Ceramic pots are far too painfully hot to touch. Yet, under 30% shade, the cacti don't really seem to mind that much!
