Help With an ID please

Post by don »

Sorry for the less than perfect pictures but not too long after these were taken a herd of some unknown animals came and had a late night dinner party and left me with nothing but nubs and the bill ! They must have been small animals because my gardens are entirely surrounded by concrete block walls and the only things that get in are snakes, mice and really fat pack rats (the probable guilty parties). Any idea what these (the cacti) were? I'd like to get some more and put them in pots (elevated). Thank you.

in carefree you might get a peccary.. or a pig or whatever other name you can call those guys, but they eat cacti, and love to eat the roots, buds, and pads of cacti. Also it could be rabbits. I don't think packrats actually eat cacti, but they might take advantage of a nice tasty stem that isn't spiny! :)
Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.

Probably pigs. We have those pests here too and they eat anything that's not nailed down!! Get a gun and go hunting! :-)

For once the pigs are not guilty. They are all over the place here but there is no way they can inside my block well. Maybe a rabbit or two. I've actually sat quiet in my backyard at night (with a cold beer of course) and watched the pack rats eat some of my cactus. Actually, they don't do much eating; they take the pieces and make huge nests. I catch at least a couple every month
