Nopales for dinner
My mother-in-law is visiting from Mexico and out to the cactus patch for some nopales. This is a light and easy way to enjoy Opuntia ficus-indica. It can be called a salad or even a dip with chips.

That makes me hungry!
All Cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are Cacti
Re: Nopales for dinner
I was hoping for a recipe so that when I grow enough I could try it.
I am just looking for the defining statement to put here. Follow this link to see my other cacti.

looks good. Most Opuntia aren't toxic but a few have high levels of alkaloids in them. For those of you willing to try them, they are from what I have heard quite tasty. however O. englemannii is a pain in the jerk to prepare and I didnt try it when my ex-wife prepared it due to the threat of glochids.. She took a bite and spit it out and said it was gross lol.
Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.

While in California recently I had a chance to eat cactus and found the cactus by itself is almost tasteless. Mixed with the right peppers and spices it was good, but by itself very bland.

I agree that it can be bland, but have you had a salad with just plain lettuce? Add spices, condiments and whatever you like. Or nopales and eggs with some good hot sauce. Now were talking.
Re: Nopales for dinner
I remember my mom used to make us filete asado, con frijoles de la holla, nopalitos, salsa picosa y tortillas recien hechas,
filete asado is actually thin sliced filet Mignon with juice of sour lime, salt and cooked in a pan with little bit of oil, served in a plate with fresh cooked beans (with out the liquid to avoid unwanted gases) nopalitos like the ones in the picture, hot salsa, and fresh hand made corn tortillas.
here is another of my favorites

is in Spanish but picture tells all.
check the link below for another one of my favorites that I have been avoiding for years because the water of the cooked frijloes (beans) are the ones that cause all the gas exhausts,
eat this plate only if you plan to be by your self the rest of the day,

I translated all the Spanish, sorry I grasped about ever fourth word but those recipes sound good. I liked the cheese stuffed pads. Sounds interesting and yummy, sorta like cheese stuffed peppers.
