Wintering seedlings

Post by Franj »

This is the first season I've tried to raise some cacti from seed. I've had some success germinating several Ferocactus, Gymnocalyciums, Astrophytums and even Leuchtenbergia principus.

How do you treat these plants in the off season? Most of my mature non cold hardys will winter in my greenhouse at temps that vary from 90 degrees F daytime to 40 at night. Can these seedlings take that? Some of them are smaller than a pin head.

I can also provide a place in the house where they can get filtered light from a south facing window and be kept a bit warmer. Would this be better?

I think they would benefit from the sunny window and warmth. The tiny plants don't have enough energy reserves to be dormant and dry all winter with nights in the 40s. They will also benefit from an occasional misting if inside in warmth..
