You say aluminum I say aluminium!

Ever wondered how the difference arose? Seems it was down to the discoverer.

Re: Degrafting moon cactus

Douwe's method is probably the safest, if it does grow pups. As was implied, rooting variegated cacti depends on whether they have enough green chlorophyll producing tissue to thrive on their own roots. The red and orange "Moon Cacti" of course have none therefore they or their offsets can...

Re: Watering at night or early morning -- does it matter?

A lot can depend on your climate. In a hot climate watering at night may mean the pot stays wet for longer, which may be desirable. Whereas in a colder climate watering in the warmth of the day will allow it to dry out quicker than at watering at night. The question is how long is too long for our p...

Re: 8 little cacti

You could be right loyall. If so it is a more hairy form than the average M. guelzowiana's, maybe a selected hairier clone, but there are some more hairy ones here. https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=mammillaria%20guelzowiana&qs=MM&form=QBIRMH&sp=1&ghc=1&lq=0&pq=mammillaria...

Re: 8 little cacti

Number 1 could also be Mammillaria albicoma, but hard to tell from the photo, but seems hairier to me than M. guelzowiana. However flowers would sort it out as M. albicoma has M. bocasana type small white flowers, whilst M. guelzowiana large pink ones. Rest I agree with Anttisepp https://worldofsucc...

Re: scapharostrus, scaphirostris or scaphirostrus?

Hi Nino, As Arjen says the name change to "famantinensis" was published in David Hunt's "Cactaceae Systematic Initiatives" by Schlumpberger. This was the publication Hunt was using to update his "New Cactus Lexicon", which now will never happen after his death, with DNA...

scapharostrus, scaphirostris or scaphirostrus?

It was recently brought to my attention that David Hunt's correction of Ariocarpus scapharostrus to Ariocarpus scaphirostris was probably invalid. Therefore the correct version is seemingly somewhere between the two - Ariocarpus scaphirostrus? https://www.cactusnames.org/ariocarpus-scaphirostrus/ &q...

Re: San pedro - pc or not

As Nachtkrabb says there are quite a few similar Trichocereus. In fact I believe Kurt Backeberg even introduced a virtually spineless one as a grafting stock that was easier to graft onto having no spines. Many of the Trichocereus contain alkaloids, therefore were cultivated and spread around in S. ...

Re: Most delightful fragrance in cacti?

Scents are a matter of personal opinion since some people are more sensitive to some than others. No plants I know naturally use humans as pollinators so don't produce scent to suit us! It has been found many plants release their scents only at certain times of the day or night when their pollinator...

Re: Judging show quality cactus

Cactus Shows and judging differ around the world wherever you go. Local ones are often judged by a general gardener with some classes for cacti among the garden plants, but specialist cactus shows usually use more qualified judges. Some countries rate fancy expensive pots highly in judging, whereas ...

Re: Cactus ID: 7 years seed grown

Hi nachtkrabb in the UK we tend to insulate our greenhouses with bubblewrap in winter to save heating costs, though I also do running a cold greenhouse too. The problem is if left up all year with standard bubblewrap it only lasts a season of so before it disintegrates due to Ultra Violet light (UV)...
