Accidental seedlings inspiring experiment
I've grown cacti from seed before with some success - they needed babying, close monitoring of the moisture level, etc. I recently had an experience, though, of growing cactus seedlings without trying, which has me thinking I may have hit on a better way to do it. I mulch my cactus pots with coarse ...

Re: MEALY BUGS on Copiapoa Tenuissima HELP!
My approach is to mix up a couple or three gallons of soap solution in a five gallon bucket and plunge the cacti in their pots into it, leave them to soak for 15-30 minutes - assuming they're small enough to fit. This will even get mealies on the roots, it ensures you get total coverage.

Re: A little bitty - what?
decipiens is a sure miss, by about a mile or so )) Ya think? Lot of variation in decipiens, it's a pretty big target. :D I'm just throwing darts blindfolded at this point, not much value in trying to guess. It's changed a lot in the last year - longer spines, starting to grow hair - it may change a...

Re: A little bitty - what?
@ Majcka - I've had it a few years, potted it up from the 2 inch pot it was in when purchased. It's definitely one plant. @ vlani - Yes, I was pretty sure it's a mamm. M. compressa does look like a possibility, but I'm leaning more toward M. decipiens. Like you say, there's a few it could be, though...

Re: A little bitty - what?
M. polythele is usually solitary, though it seems there are exceptions. Quite a variable species apparently. That's not wool in the axils, by the way, but coarse hairs - here's a better close-up.

A little bitty - what?
This little guy I took for a Coryphantha at first glance, but I see no grooves in the tubercles. Mammillaria? In a 3 inch pot, a few years old, yet to bloom. Can anybody put a name to it?

Re: Mamm. Rhodantha? and tiny Opuntia or ?
Thanks for your input, guys. I need to prune a tree, been setting the cacti farther and farther from it to stay out of its shade but it looks like they aren't getting as much light as they used to. That Ferocactus used to have a bit stouter spines. It shows more color in summer, though, but just on ...

Re: Mammillaria id? (updated May 3, new pics)
By "brown streaks", do you mean the stripes on the flowers? Many Mammillarias have those, perfectly normal.

Re: Trichocereus huascha cristata by any other name...
A bunch of other genera were merged into Echinopsis - Trichocereus, Lobivia, Chamaecereus, and a number of less familiar ones.

Prolifera also normally has centrals. Here's a duwei that doesn't: http://www.cactus-art.biz/schede/MAMMIL ... en_810.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Mamm. Rhodantha? and tiny Opuntia or ?
I know it looks that way, but I put them outside where they get full sun until late afternoon. The Ferocactus below has grown its whole life in the same conditions, think they need more light?

Mammilloydia candida, maybe?
The second could well be Parodia scopa, there are many color phases. I really like that one.

Re: Parodia?
Hard to pin down the species in that condition. I'd introduce it to stronger light gradually; as pale and stretched-out as it is it could sun-scorch easily.
