Here's another form I have with more spines per areole... it generally produces more flowers, but the plant is not as attractive in my opinion.

I reckon Daiv is close, I'd have suggested 10-12 yrs... it depends on how hard it has been grown!

Mine has flowered three times this season and more buds coming... it's not self fertile, so I have to wait for it's sibling to flower before I can get seed http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a44/cactuspolecat/Cacti/Misc/Strombocactus_discifirmis_0809a.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a44/cactuspol...

Well the picture sent me scrambling through books etc. hoping to come up with some sort of ID, but I've drawn a blank. I'm sure I've seen something like it somewhere but cannot recall.

Hey Iso... nice one! when I read the topic, I was wondering which of our Northern Hemisphere friends has one of these flowering out of season... Good to see another Aussie here. Vlani, - this is normal for the flower... or maybe we both got lucky :D Here's mine: http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a44/...

Thanks guys, great to be the source of enjoyment at a time when things are shutting down in your hemisphere.
Yeah Daiv... whenever I see knippelianus in flower, I can't help but wonder what happened to the green stigma.

I'm thinking Daiv is getting close... my first impression is Cleistocactus, not sure about strausii, though the older stems can get a bit discoloured with age sometimes.

I reckon #3 is a form of Gymnocalycium monvillei. Somewhere in the same paddock as this. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a44/cactuspolecat/Cacti/Gymnocalycium/th_Gymnocalycium_monvillei_1207a.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a44/cactuspolecat/Cacti/Gymnocalycium/th_Gymnocalycium_monvillei_1205a...
