Rocks
Sometimes when you are out looking at cactus you can't help notice other things, like the rocks. A shot that includes the environment around the subject can give more meaning to a photo.

Re: CactiGuide.com Big Picture Project
Hybrid cactus have their fanciers. I can't think of any particular website but google things like 'Hybrid epiphyllum", "hybrid peanut cactus", etc. and you will find things. Big Picture project is more for species, your posts would probably go under General. You can upload photos dire...

Nobody lives forever...
I was hiking on Spirit Mountain, Nevada, and saw something round in shape on the side of a small wash. Further investigation showed the carcass of a mature barrel cactus. Growing at an angle out of the crack in the rock probably speeded up its death as gravity helped pull it down. IMG_1669r_1.jpg IM...

Re: Pena de la Cruz, Jinotega, Nicaragua
Cuttings can best be had on private property once you introduce yourself and explain what you are doing. Their radar is out for housebreakers. squatters, and cattle rustlers; once they see what you are doing they are glad to help. Road easements are another good area for whatever survives people, ca...

Pena de la Cruz, Jinotega, Nicaragua
This is a well known spot famous for its annual religious pilgrimage and the short but steep hiking trail. The upper level is in pre-montane forest which is seasonally dry. The cacti are in sheltered spots, probably to resist excessive drying from the winds. I found Epiphyllum (probably costarisense...

Re: Anybody else here love the epiphytes? Which are your favorites?
I live in the tropics where native species are available. E. rubrocoronatum and E. thomasianum are among my favorites although I was amazed at how big E. thom grew in my poly tunnel. Even the basics like rhipsalis can be charming in hanging baskets. You might want to check out the youtube channel ht...

I have a couple growing in my yard and I will make a point to photograph the flowers this year.

Re: Cacti identification
New cactus lexicon seems to be out of print, both volumes. You might browse https://exoticplantbooks.com/ https://exoticplantbooks.com/detail/?product_id=1036 Lode's site is http://cactus-aventures.com/Taxonomy_of_the_Cactaceae_ENG.html Inter-library loan is always an option-- but be prepared to sig...

Re: Cacti identification
Lately I have been frequenting Kew-- http://www.theplantlist.org/ and https://www.inaturalist.org/ fairly frequently.
The latter I take with a grain of salt because it is an pop publication with scientific overview so individual posts have to be scrutinized.

Re: Cacti identification
For print books I have Lode's, Hunt's and Anderson's main volumes. All are quite pricey, even on the used market but they are the main resources. Since the first 2 authors have passed away, it is unlikely that they will be updated. Lode is concentrating on DNA research, so it is the most current and...

Re: Cute Echeveria species
Found another one growing on trees in cloud forest. I took some cuttings and hopefully it will flower this year so I have a chance to ID it. Literature says there are 3 species native to Nicaragua, E. australis, E. Pittieri, and E guatemalensis, plus possibly E maxonii.

Re: is the echeveria stretched?
My general plan for succulents in pots in the tropics is morning sun or equivalent and protection from rain in the rainy season to prevent root rot.

Philodendron sp.
When I think of succulents philodendrons are not the first things to come to mind but this one certainly has adaptations to survive the dry season in Central America. In wetter locations it has 3 foot long leaves that can be green all year. As can be seen in the photos, it looses leaves as necessary...
