Re: Who grows Mammillaria beneckei?

FWIW, my observations on growing this extraordinary species (largest seed in the genus, and with no known close relatives), are as follows: This is the most cold sensitive species of Mam. that I've ever grown. Below 25° F, they can be damaged. The only other species that I'm aware of that's this sen...

Re: My first cactus bloom of 2024 on Jan 5

Nice pic it's most likely a https://cactiguide.com/cactus/?genus=Mammillaria&species=microhelia What I inferred from the CactiGuide description of M. microhelia is that the variant microheliopsis has pink-striped blossoms like mine. That opinion has been the subject of debate for decades. Some ...

Re: Hydrochloric acid

Pediocactus and Sclerocactus would probably benefit. Opuntioid seeds would be good candidates too. I've read at least twice that Echinocactus [/i] and Homalocephala [/i] are easier to coax into germination by using it as a means of scarification prior to applying water (soaking in acid overnight). ...

Re: ID Help please

loyall, I have seen specimens for sale under the name Mammillaria pseudoperbella (synonym for M. perbella ) that looked exactly like your plant. So, I agree with your initial guess. Thank you Nino_G for that feedback. So perhaps I was correct. I'll just wait to see how it develops and blossoms. Bef...

Thus far I haven't started any from my last order. I almost always get a great percentage of their seed to sprout (unlike many other seed vendors). In a month or 2, they will strike out the seed which is sold out. That's a good time to place an order.

Re: What are you sowing?

Since almost all of my seedlings are in a dormant state until Spring, I'll try to remember to post some images of the species I mentioned. I like your approach to the use of beneficial organisms, and I too am starting to employ a similar strategy. It sounds like a logical method to use for the more ...

I try to follow a lot of these Zoom talks and think (besides this) BCSS does a great job. Were these also held before the pandemic? Regarding the lecture of Rob Stevenson, I must say it's confusing. According to Llifle, Turbinicarpus pseudomacrochele is the accepted scientific name, but the Interna...
