Re: Does anyone have any ideas FOR Round Robin 2014
Here is an idea, instead of a round robin, a mystery swap. All that are interested sign up and we can have someone outside the country asign who sends to who. Everyone will fill up a small priority mail box with plants and cuttings and send to their assigned recipient. This way all will recieve a pa...

Re: Epiphyllum anguliger or Selenicereus anthonyanus or othe
I nbuse coconut coir/perlite 50:40amended with bonemeal ~ 1-2% and a dash of epsom salt to balance Ca & Mg, I also amend with bloodmeal to give some N and trace minerals. The Webercereus is readily obtanable from Don's cutting. I may be wrong but my Epiphyllum anguliger is less wide than my Webe...

Re: Rooting an echidnopsis
After scaring for two weeks, I would treat with a fungicide (sulfurr, thiram, benomyl etc) and rooting hormone (Indolegutyric acid). Minimalwater for the first month and than sparingly. Bobby Z

Re: Using BAP/Lanolin mixture to force branching
BAP is a cytokinin not anb auxin I purchased from MNFERTS for ~ 10.00 per 5 grams. In my last experiment I applied in asaturated emulsion in canola oil. I couldn't find pure lanolin anywhere. My experiments on several speies are in progress and dtails are on Cactus and Succulent biology group on Fac...

Re: proposed new naming system
This genomic based nomenclature can be useful in many arenas, howvere DNA sorting of taxonmic linkages is already sending cactus ID into caos. One of the more interesting is a paper by Shlumpberger and Renner on the phylogeny of Echinopsis in Amer. J. Botany 99:1335-1349 2012. Download for free http...

Re: Is there any way to "nudge" a cactus into producing pups
I have been trying to do so using BAP Aminobenzylpurine, an artificial cytokinin to induce mereistematic growth. It seem to work on Echinocereus/trichocereus.

Re: Discocactus 101
My D. araneispinus does well in 50% diatomaceus earth and 50% cactus potting soil. I am too lazy for continuous feeding. It has a nice cephaleum and has grown 25% since October in a dish garden with Gymnos. I water ~ every 3 to 4 weeks on my NE Florida screened lanai. It does well even with a slight...

I had both planted outside in a sandy North East Florida sandy soil. We had a six hour below freezing down to 24 F for two hours. E, Texensis bit the dust while E. horizanthalonious survived, One observation

Re: Soil sterilisation.
The microwave method is easy, however organic soils can accumulate some phenolics from the breakdown of humus, especially if done too long. These compounds may cause more havoc than pathogens to some species. But it is by far the easiest method for household growers.
