Re: Are you growing your cacti in a soilless mix?

Hello everyone, I’ve recently went to a full hydro mix of pure pumice and it takes around 8-10 days to go from fully wet to bone dry depending on how warm and dry the environment is. Should I add in another mineral that doesn’t hold as much moisture to get the medium to dry out faster or is that ti...

Cacti we've lost in 2023

These five of my plants are among those perished at some point this year. https://live.staticflickr.com/1492/24188582092_16015fd625_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/5765/22746294492_f5187a8e75_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52681806518_87ac4165b1_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/655...

Re: Opinions on Bonsai Jack?

.... By "mineral nutrition" do you mean there's some other component(s) that you'd add to these mixes to provide some more nutrients a la The Stone Eaters, or just that you still need to periodically fertilize with water? If you don't mix some granulate fertilizer into that mix you have t...

Re: Opinions on Bonsai Jack?

Features look great. But the price is kind of high even for large packages. If you keep or try for 3 plants is fine but for large collection...

And we still have to use additional mineral nutrition with these mixes.

Re: Cacti flowering in fall

Few days later I had buds on a couple Echinopsis.
Keeping those plants indoors? If weather worsens the buds can be aborted or stay small until next spring.

Re: Cacti flowering in fall

These plants can be just late with their bloom. Or your summer is still ongoing. What is your climate? In collections Ariocarpus sp. are typical fall bloomers. Also Ferocactus latispinus. My Mammillaria huitzilopochtli also blooms in December even in Oaxaca they experience no real winters but just d...

Re: Most delightful fragrance in cacti?

Aside of E. oxigona that was filling with fragrnce whole my balcony even in the morning after a night of blooming , I have to mention the local E. vivipara. Its flowers spread rose scent at least 1 - 2 meters around it especially if the air is more less still.

Re: P. Pecten-aboriginum?

The new growth looks like vegetative offsets. Buds of this one are Echinopsis type: sharp, back and hairy.
Assuming you live in northern hemisphere, I don't think this plant will bloom in October... Also looks more-little shaded along that wall.

Re: How to ship seedlings only an inch?

This size of cacti is definitely easier to ship than 1 or 2 meter high plants. Do it in a cardboard box, wrapped with paper (bags), napkins and cotton between bare-rooted plants. Anticipate if your package would arrive before frosts if going to northern destinations.
