Re: Sarracenia(North American pitcher plant) divisions for trade
Would you be willing to trade a piece of your bulbophyllum for a sarr division? Yes, I can do the trade. The Bulbophyllum is growing very large and there are places I can pull some off. It is on a cork slab with LFS between the slab and the orchid. I water daily like so: First drench with DI/rain/d...

Re: My cacti and other plants
Purps are usually the most cold hardy of all sarrs. You should try a division outdoors this winter. I'm willing to bet it survives. I have all of my plants in pots, no outdoor bog. I store all my S. psittacina, S. leucophylla, S. minor and hybrids of them under the leaf pile. The VFT go under there...

Re: My cacti and other plants
Nice looking sarrs Jerry! Look really healthy. How cold does it get where you're at? Its in my signature. Neg 5F. I bury some of my plants in a deep pile of leaves covered by a plastic tarp to keep the leaves dry. I made a wire mesh cage last year to protect my plants from rodents under the leaves....

Re: Need help with Cactus ID
have been unable to ID it even after visiting the site of the original nursery it comes from: Plainview Growers. Is the Plainview Growers from New Jersey? They are located really close to my home. And they do grow cacti and succulents as well as Phalaenopsis orchids. I'm just curious how they got s...

Re: Nice to meet you all from Indonesia (and an overview on my plant journey)
I would be interested to know how they came up with that average. My water comes from reservoirs with granite and gneiss under them. Very little CaCO3 in the watershed. NYC water from the Catskills is close to RO and does not require any treatment to speak of. I tasted the water out of a water fount...

Your photos need to be less than 500 kb in size. Either host the photos elsewhere and link to them or use a photo resize tool. I use https://picresize.com/

Re: Nice to meet you all from Indonesia (and an overview on my plant journey)
I just went back and read your posts again Steve where you are quoting the Hach information. Are you saying that your tap water has an Alkalinity of 180 ppm CaCO3 and your General Hardness (Ca and Mg) is 75 ppm CaCO3? That means assuming your Ca and Mg are bicarbonates you still have other bicarbona...

Re: Fertilizer ingredient disclosure
CaCO3 (the primary carbonate) contains 40% calcium, but the complicating factor here is that all carbonates are measured as though it's only calcium carbonate. Magnesium carbonate makes up about 1/3 of the carbonates in tap water , so we'll try this: 180 ppm KH = 120 ppm CaCO3 x 0.4 = 48 ppm Ca. Mg...

Re: Sarracenia(North American pitcher plant) divisions for trade
I have seeds of Viola lanceolata, Xyris sp., and one that may be hardy by you: seeds of Sisyrinchium californicum. All collected this year and still waiting for more of the violets and Sisyrinchium to ripen and pop their seeds. And I have a dwarf growing Sphagnum moss which I collected in the Pine B...

Cleistocactus winteri?
I bought these seedlings/cuttings back on Dec 10, 2022 from a nursery in Glenside, PA called Primex. I was thinking/hoping they were a Cleistocactus when I bought them. The photo shows the scale when they were purchased. I don't have a current photo, but I potted them all in a 8" diameter pot i...

Re: My cacti and other plants
Few pitcher plants from the garden I grow quite a few CP as well. We had our first frost last night. I have to start collecting leaves to bury my more tender plants in a big leaf pile for the winter. My S. leucophylla are just putting out their best pitchers of the season. Always last like S. flava...

Very beautiful. Some really nice plants there. You said you were increasing your collection mostly via seed. Have you grown most of the plants you showed via seed? If so, my hat is off to you.

Re: Greetings from Croatia
Thank you all for a warm welcome. What are your winter temperatures like? Compared to your area we have relatively mild winters. Temperatures rarely drop below -5C (23F), and if they do, they never go below -10C (14F). Also, my balcony is south-oriented so the temperatures remain higher, even durin...
