Re: Hoodia Summer 2014
All but the H. gordonii were purchased from Arid Lands. Since they were grown from seeds, and were not cuttings, it is difficult to swear to the ID of a a given seedling unless you grow it long enough to see the flowers . . . Similar problems come up with Huernia and Stapelia seedlings. At least wit...

Re: Arrested seed pod development in Hoodia species
The buds for the flowers on this plant just started to form shortly after the seed pod began development. Last years growth is covered in buds and blooms at this time.

Re: Euphorbia obesa
I realize that this is a little late for a reply, but last year the growth center of my 6 year old E. obesa was damaged somehow. This spring it threw out five pups - and they are blooming!

Re: Found a vendor . . .
That second photo - I believe it is Euphorbia antiquorum and the center is most likely to develop into a crest. I purchased a rooted cutting of the "normal form" of E. antiquorum from Cactus King about three years ago and it promptly crested on me. This year it started what I believe will ...

Hoodia Summer 2014
The Hoodia plants are going nuts this early summer. Four out of seven species are in bloom. When the air is still around them you can almost taste the stench! The H. ruschii is likely a hybrid or another species altogether. As Saxicola kindly pointed out, the flowers are not right for H. ruschii. Pl...

Re: Succulents on the Niagara Frontier
Usually the plants are 1-2 years old when I get them. Both Out Of Africa in Naples, Florida and Arid Lands in Tuscon, Arizona are great suppliers. The plants in the rounded pots are probably 7 years old by now.

Re: Succulents on the Niagara Frontier
It's time to post a few new photos of the collection. I will start with the Hoodias and add other genuses as time permits. This year all but two should have blooms. Last year three species bloomed. Arrested seed pod development in Hoodia species
Hoodia seed pod closeup.jpg Hoodia seed pod arrested development.jpg Has anyone else had a Hoodia juttae hold off on forming it's seed horn for more than 8 months post pollination? Last September I had several late season H. juttae blooms cross pollinated by my H. godonii. Over the next two months ...

Re: How many plants do you have?
Currently there are 328 plants listed in my Excel file. Most are Euphorbias, Pachypodium, Cacti and assorted Asclepiads (Hoodia, Huernia, Stapelia etc.). I too subscribe to the survival of the fittest policy - unless I really like a specific species and want it in the collection I often don't replac...

Re: Euphorbia ID please!
The first one may be a hybrid between E. obesa and E. heptagona. The second one looks very much like a Euphorbia ingens I have grown from seed - your plant's leaves and degree of variegation is dead on for my plant. The third one kinda resembles my E. heterochroma - only it doesn't seem to branch th...

Re: New member from Western NY
Welcome to the site and greetings from another WNYer. I hail from Grand Island. I don't know about Allegeny County, but the Island is a great place to grow all sorts of succulents during the late spring/summer and early fall months. We get a nice buffering effect from the Niagara River and the Great...
