Five cacti for identification
Got a few more unnamed cacti for identification please... I think that #1 is a Ferocactus - maybe gracilis? Not sure about the others, although feel that #3 #4 #5 may all be Mammillarias. #3 is a bit of an odd one, very messy spines and strongly defined tubercles underneath - not really clear in the...

Re: Looking for voluntary work in succulent nursery
That's really helpful - thank you. I spent most of yesterday evening watching most of those videos on YouTube you recommend and also reading Kada's great guides - that is the main reason I want to go and get some more practical experience before I start myself in the spring. I know that this isn't a...

Re: Multiple stem cuttings
OK, so using that photo as an example, where would the most appropriate place to make the cutting be - would you take just the top off i.e. the first cut marked on the picture, giving a small cutting and a large stump, or take the bottom cut, taking the majority of the plant as a cutting and leaving...

Re: Multiple stem cuttings
Thank you - that makes sense!
Would an alternative idea be to graft the shorter and less viable slices to a rootstock? Would this eliminate the issue of the potential for water loss and reduced rooting success as the stock would take over these responsibilities...?

Looking for voluntary work in succulent nursery
I am looking to do some voluntary work in a nursery specialising in succulents, specifically cacti. I am planning on starting a small nursery myself this year and really want to do some work in other nurseries to further my knowledge and experience. Specifically, I am looking to work upon my propaga...

Multiple stem cuttings
I know that stem cuttings can be taken from a cactus as well as tip cuttings, but am interested in how much a plant cut be sliced up and still achieve rooting success. Is it enough to just leave, say 5cm, of stem for each cutting, ensuring that there is at least one areole on each section? I have at...

Re: Four cacti for identification
It certainly does! Think that is definitely the one - the reddish-brown colouring around the areole matches exactly. Found this picture on cactus-biz and it looks identical - just have to wait for the flowers for confirmation! http://www.cactus-art.biz/schede/MAMMILLARIA/Mammillaria_sphaerica/Mammil...

Re: Four cacti for identification
It does look similar to Mammillaria hahniana, however, the spines have a reddish tinge to the tips, whereas it doesn't look this is the case for M. hahnana - unless there are variants / subspecies?
Could it be M. Spinosissima?

Re: Four cacti for identification
Thank you
The Mammillaria matudae is a pretty handsome chap! Glad to get the Corypantha down to genus level, looks like the species could be pretty difficult as its seems to be a pretty big genus with not a lot of information....

Re: Starting a small-scale succulent nursery - UK
That's really helpful Dave and confirms I should avoid plants from tropical areas for the time being. I agree that these are certainly not the plants to grow for high margins and quick turnover! However, I am hoping to sell direct to retail customers in urban areas at a higher price than a collector...

Fantastic, many thanks for the Parodia, Myrtillocactus and Cephalocereus confirmation - really helpful.
Any chance of narrowing down the Mamillaria, Aloe and Pachyphytum (?) to species? I've added some close up pictures below....
Thanks

Six idents please
Hello, just brought these six from a market, none of which are labelled. Anybody able to help with identification...? I think the tall columnar one is possibly Echinopsis pachanoi, the hairy cactus, Cephalocereus sinilis, the grey succulent a Pachyphytum and the v-shaped succulent possibly a Gasteri...
