Re: Growing dioscorea elephantipes from seed

Most of my seedlings retain their leaves for at least the first 2 years. One did so for 6 years before it went dormant. It may not die every year. I have one that stayed green and with leaves for 1,5 year and only now dropped leaves. It seems I have much more work to do on my dioscorea seed raising...

Re: Growing dioscorea elephantipes from seed

I treat them the same as i do the adult plants, water while theres a living steam and then stop once it dies back!

What is your smallest graft?

I have been researching grafting aztekium seedlings, but I want some inspiration. Please show me pictures of the smallest seedlings you have successfully grafted!

Re: Harvesting rebutia seeds

Should the seeds be harvested when the fruit is still gummy or dried up? I waited til one minuscula pod was dried up but still no luck. Luckily that one blooms repeatedly and is self fertile so lots of ‘practice’ seeds. I dont make any effort to collect or germinate seed from my rebutia but I often...

Re: My sowing diary.

Are you dates when you sowed them or when they germinated? I ask because my Carnegiea gigantea are only six months old and your picture shows them being about 1/3 smaller than mine. My C.gigantea are comparable size for the age as Pricky, I would be very impressed for 3 times that size in only 6 mo...

Re: How much light?

I'm no expert, but 25-33% of sunlight seems very high for T5 lighting. I used to grow underneath a fixture of 4xT5HO and I cant remember figures exactly but only inches away put the light barely comparable to a bright overcast day. The sun is just very bright

Re: Pereskiopsis growing methods

Pereskiopsis grow like mad in Turkish Bath type humid conditions Aaron. You want to house the trays in one of those transparent plastic top type propagators, or arrange a polythene tent over your trays and keep them in a warm part of the greenhouse so you get visible condensation running down the i...

Pereskiopsis growing methods

Hi everyone, My pereskiopsis used to grow like a weed when my collection was small enough to live indoors, but last year I moved to a greenhouse. Since then my pereskiopsis growth has seemed pretty naff, certainly not comparable to what I was getting before. I live in the UK so we aren't talking abs...

Tephrocactus ripe seed pod

Hi everyone! Does anyone have pictures of a ripe, fertile seed containing tephrocactus seed pod, for my own reference? I'm guessing it's similar to other genus like opuntia, but couldn't find any pictures on the internet so any would be appreciated. Thanks

First time grafting

I really wanted to try grafting and I couldn't wait to find Periskiopsis cuttings, so I went ahead and tried with some Schlumbergera stock. These pictures are three days on from grafting and are sat in a humidity chamber under lights. I was worried that the grafts wouldn't take because they are a bi...

My first sowing results

Hi all, I got into sowing last year and the first three pots I planted were just a generic mixed selection of cacti from eBay. It was August last year, but early on I cooked them and they took months to recover and begin growing again so they aren't as big as typical >1 year seedlings. They were rep...

mesemb humidity advice

Hello all! Im a newbie to growing cacti from seed, and just growing cacti for that matter. I've been having relative success with my first sowing of seeds, all under artificial light (t5, 6500k), and most of my cacti have been propagating well. My mesembs, on the other hand, aree a bit meh tbh. I ha...
