Repotting clumping succulents

I have several small, I think they're Orostachys spinosa, plants. From what research i've done, they naturally form clumps. Would it be wise to get a wide dish pot and plant several at once so they can clump and spread, or will the individual plants compete too much? They remind me of the Sempervivu...

Re: Is this pot too tall

I'm still a rookie when it comes to cactus care, but I think that pot might be too tall for that cactus. To me, that species looks similar to one my mother has, Pilosocerus azureus. She's had hers for over 25 years and it's about 3' tall. If this species grows like the Pilosocerus azureus, you're go...

Re: Ouchies

Thanks for the ideas DaveW, but this plant is a little small to manipulate with newspaper. I used receipt paper I had laying around and even through that one layer, I was losing my dexterity.

Re: Ouchies

I was wondering if nitrile gloves would help. I have a box of black ones I use around the house for chemical tasks. Thanks a lot Cactus Fan Dan.

Ouchies

I recently acquired an Opuntia Rufida monstrose and it's in need of some repotting. The problem is, those glochids are nasty. Does anyone have a recommendation for gloves or other hand protection to keep glochids out of my fingers? I'm disinclined to use tongs because this plant is very small and I ...

Re: Repotting help

Thanks for all the help. The cactus was successfully repotted. We left the soil dry and loosened the root ball by running a knife along the edge of the old pot, like for a stuck cake.

Repotting help

I searched the internet for help on repotting cacti and I've found contradicting information. Is it best to wet the soil first before removing the plant from the old pot, or is it a good idea to leave the soil dry and water the plant after repotting? I want to avoid breaking the old pot if at all po...

Tall cactus with the wobbles

My mother has an about 3' tall Pilosocerus azureus that is looking a little top-heavy. The base is a lot narrower in diameter than the top, with about 2" corked. She's had the cactus for over 25 years and we're getting concerned about stability. Would it hurt the cactus to sink it deeper in the...

Re: 3 new succulents

The third one is definitely a Kalanchoe, and from those leaves, it looks like a "Mother of Thousands". Keep it separate from other plants so those babies on the leaf tips don't shed into other plants' pots and invade.

Re: Lots of ID Help

I'm not sure how to use the macro on my camera, if I get much closer than the shots I have, they blur out on me. My camera isn't the best.

Ok, I'll be patient. I had a feeling the teeny-minis might be a little hard to figure out. Thanks for the help.

Re: Lots of ID Help

The leaves are very smooth, a little shiny too. The lowest leaves, which are dried up now, had purplish-red spots all over, not just the edges.

Lots of ID Help

The first set of pics is some plants I thought were Crassula pulverulenta, but as they grew, the long outer leaves got crispy and hollow inside. When I peeled away the dead leaves the plants look all folded up with pups underneath like a Sempervivum. I don't know if I ID'ed them correctly. Crassula ...

Straw flower removal tips

I was recently at Lowes for some household supplies, when I spotted this charming little Mammilaria microhelia in the garden center, but the poor thing was suffering from a bad case of Straw Flower disease. I've heard it's curable, any tips or ideas for a cure? My poor plant is so sad with that gaud...

Fenestraria Aurantiaca In Bloom

My little Fenestraria, a rescue from Lowes late in the season, was my first ever cactus or succulent to bloom in my care. I was so happy to see that flower. The stem got a little floppy on me, the plant was getting a little leggy from being in the store, but that made for a rather interesting photo-...
