Re: Illegal Collecting
This is somethjng I've seen coming for years. Eventually there will be no wilderness left to speak of. I do believe that properly documented collections really do constitute a valuable "invisible ark" for species in the future. It's not perfect, plants are often unconsciously selected for ...

Re: could someone tell me what these are??
Obviously the first is grafted, most likely Copiapoa laui.
The second I would say is Echinocereus brandegeei, a beautiful plant but a bit more reluctant to flower compared to other echinocerei. It will appreciate as much sun and warmth as you can give it in the growing season.

Re: ID request for 3 cacti-- thanks!
Very generally speaking, when they are bloated and overwatered they aren't actually as healthy as they appear. It can make them more susceptible to sudden rotting and bugs in my experience rather like the thin skinned juiciness of a cactus fresh from a mass production greenhouse. Obviously true spec...

Re: fertilizer
I fertilise 2 - 3 times in the growing season, and even then only those that haven't been recently repotted. My potting mix has some JI in it so is not lacking to begin with.

This is one of the notocactus species that has been lumped with parodias. More commonly seen under notocactus buiningii.

I personally would remove the new pad and try to root that down. If you're lucky it may not have spread into that new tissue yet.

I would hazard a guess at a cristate euphorbia, however I couldn't definitely tell you the species.

Some very nice plants, the lobivia is my favourite one. I would say however that number 12 isn't M. fraileana, not sure what it actually is though.

Re: Why do novices always use clay pots?
I'm with Dave when it comes to pots in shows, as long as it is clean and neat it is just a container. The plant is what should be judged. My local society branch does have a bowl garden class at least once a year and that does include points for aesthetics. Normally however they are the standard pla...

Re: Help identify budding/spreading cactus
They are etiolated, they need more light or they'll just grow into weak stringy stalks. The base area looks similar to lobivia arachnacantha, if not exactly that then very likely an echinopsis type of plant. If it is L.arachancantha it clusters heavily and produces very nice flowers in various colou...
