Re: Chopped Mammillaria carmenae

Mammillaria glassii has very pink flesh, the birds in my garden kindly showed me by pulling a rather nice clump apart for their nests a few weeks ago! Guess those hairs looked too tempting, perils of no greenhouse. Managed to save most of it though so I wasn't too upset.

Re: What was your first cactus ever?

Notocactus magnificus, a local collector had a small display at a fête and a few young plants for sale. I picked up a couple but this one was my favourite. I was 11 and it survived until I was 18, it was one of the plants too large to come to uni with me. So it was left in my mothers "care"...

Re: echinopsis oxygona var??

E. oxygona is very variable as to spination, from plants almost spineless that used to be known as E. eyriesii, to spiny ones like yours, plus both forms grow within a few feet of each other in the same population. Also the flowers can vary from white to pink. Some cactus species are very stable in...

Re: Gymnocalycium graft?

Not sure on the ID I'm afraid, but it certainly does look like a gymnocalycium. Separating shouldn't be too difficult, wait until it's properly growing and when you're feeling brave, with a clean blade, cut straight across through the lowest part of the globe, if you leave a bit on the hylocereus st...

Re: Couldn't believe my eyes!

When I was repotting some of mine this week I was taken by surprise by my echinocereus pulchellus, it was in a 2 inch pot last spring, I moved it up to a much larger one and while the above ground grew ok and flowered well, it didn't get much bigger. The roots had done all the growing, over 2.5 inch...

Re: I'm declaring spring

Beautiful, those first two look so nice! I always find the sight of buds pushing through exciting, at the moment another one that I raised from seed is budding for the first time a Mammillaria scheideana giselae. The parent plant had bright pink flowers so fingers crossed this does too. But I totall...

I got my caput-medusae seeds from succseed, (along with a bunch of other stuff) 4/5 germinated quickly. Not sure if he'd have sold out by now though.

Re: my collection so far....

Congratulations! That's an impressive recovery. Half a day of weak sunshine last week and my ferocactus latispinus has bleached out marks :( everything else was fine though. Hopefully that'll grow out quite quickly.

Re: New to cacti and I have no clue what this is

I would be inclined to wait until its moved away from the apex of the plant.sometimes these are fairly easy to remove but if its a tough one I would try to tease it away, a bit at a time if necessary. Take your time and don't rush, it won't really bother the plant but they're not very nice.
