My addition to this topic is the grafting species involved. Opuntia compressa (or O. humifusa ), the eastern prickly pear, is found in a variety of habitats throughout the eastern United States and is extremely hardy, able to do well in alkaline or acidic soils, even the same specimen (think limesto...

Hi Johnny! Nice looking plants! And cool pots, too! John from the Temple's Gate wrote an interesting post a while back about the plagues of cactus taxonomy. And I also had a few points to add, too. One thing to remember is that cactus genera (= genuses) change, transfer, etc., quite readily, all dep...

Yeah, I thought you'd like it, Bill! I have some close-ups of some of the specimens, including a magenta-flowered little prickly pear, looks vaguely like O. polyacantha trichophora , though I could be wrong... :-k That little gem was hiding, I was driving away when this glint of red caught my eye......

Garden on the Street

Howdy, We is on our way to DisneyWorld! And will be back on the Fourth of July. Yes, we intend to have oodles of fun! In the meantime, here is a nice garden here in Canyon, Texas. http://scorpionguide.com/streetgarden.jpg Toward the back, before the last yellow Opuntia flowers on the right of the fr...

I have eaten the fruit and flower petals of many of our southwestern cacti, and have eaten the pads of prickly pear, but never cooked. Mainly as a survival technique. What I keep in my backpack when hiking/camping is a wet washcloth in a ziploc bag (or two). These work great to remove the glochids f...

Correction to the Fairy Ring posting: It was Dr. Robert H. Peebles, who died in 1957. I was thinking david Griffiths because he debated Burbanks spineless cacti, that they actually did occur in nature, especially South Texas. I could copy the actual portion where I read that info, and it would proba...

Maybe he just needs Santa 8) When researching about spineless prickly pears, I came across some info about how Opuntias can drastically change their dominant characteristics within 50 or so years. It seems that Lyman Benson was a protege of David Griffiths (I need to verify this, it's from me brain)...

Great idea for a category! Thanks Daiv! (And John?)

So, John, what has happened to the collection? Is it in temp. storage at Kew or somewhere like that? Or just enjoying the English summer at your place?

Nice shots of yer garden, Bill, I hope when mine gets going it will rival yours! 8)

Welcome to the cacti looney bin! \:D/ But seriously, we love helping anyone when we can. I'm sure we all started out here by asking a question or three! Unfortunately, I'm not the one for exotics! My main bag, next to scorpions (quit laughing, guys! ), is our native succulents, like cacti and...

My turn! But, it might not be much! 1) The plant in the far right of the frame looks like cow-tongue prickly pear, Opuntia lindheimerii var. linguiformis , a common cultivar in Texas. 2) Looks like Agave potatorum , from the Mexican Plateau states of Puebla and Mexico, 4,000-7,000 feet but not frost...

I'm sorry, Andy, I didn't quite follow that.

Thanks,
